Supercar Visit Broadens Horizons for STEM Careers

Budding Mayfield engineers learned first-hand about where a career in engineering can take them

The Old Palace grounds rumbled with the sound of a McLaren supercar on July 29th when the girls were visited by Holly Yeoman, a Senior Project Engineer in the propulsion/powertrain department with McLaren.

Holly is part of the Propulsion team responsible for design and delivery in supercars as well as cars produced for retail. She was recently awarded a Top 40 Under 40 Business award for Surrey and will join the McLaren F1 W Series team (the team which races in all-female competitive circuit). Holly spoke to the girls about  what she does, how she got there, her educational path and route into McLaren and answered questions from the girls. Holly was joined by her colleague Ella, who works in the quality team and specialises in materials.

The girls were very eager to learn about some exciting career possibilities that are open to them. Year 12 Grace, who arranged the visit, reported afterward, 'Many girls came away with a renewed sense of curiosity and are now eager to learn more about STEM and engineering possibilities. Holly and Ella have become role models for us [Young] Cornelians and are our current STEM heroes. Mayfield School aims to keep in contact with McLaren and organise more events and workshops with them in the coming years.'
