Your Personal Data on OC CONNECT

Who Can See What?

The Development and Alumnae Relations team takes your personal data security very seriously, and that is one of the reasons we are so delighted to introduce OC Connect, a dedicated online site for Old Cornelians to engage with each other and with Mayfield School in a secure, closed environment. This document describes the different aspects of how your data (including images) may be seen or not seen by others.

OC CONNECT has a public side and a private side. Anyone can see the main parts of the website and things that we'd like to share with the wider world, such as News items about Mayfield School or publicity celebrating an Old Cornelian's achievements. To get an idea of what is visibile, you may have a look around the site without creating an account profile. 

If you would like to start engaging with the OC Community on OC CONNECT, then you are invited to create an Account Profile by clicking the 'Join' button on the Home page. The identities of all new joiners and their relationship(-s) with the OC Community will be verified against existing records by the OC Liaison or another system administrator before their request is approved. This added level of security is greater than that available on most other social media channels. And, unlike other channels, once you have joined OC CONNECT, your interactions with the site and other registered members is not and cannot be detected by third parties.

Below is an overview of the different levels of Personal Account visibility on OC CONNECT. Our full Privacy Policy is available via the link at the bottom of the Home Page. 

OC News: Includes items of public interest, such as an award, book launch or a career appointment. These news items are visible to the public to celebrate the achievements of our Old Cornelians beyond the OC Community and may be included in our Old Cornelians Newsletter. If you submit a news story of this type but would rather not share it publicly, then please submit it as a 'Class Note' and we will treat it as described below. You may even just send us notification of your news to be added to your personal, off-line record, where only the system administrators can see it.

Note: If an OC News item is deemed to contain personal data that should be protected, the system administrators can 'lock' the item so that only logged-in users can view the contents

Class Notes: These are your personal updates that are only visibile to other registered users of OC CONNECT and can include things like life events, house moves, exhibitions or performances, reunions with other OCs or anything else you'd like to share with the OC Community. These bits of news are only available to the logged-in members of OC CONNECT. If there is not an accompanying photo with your news, we may insert a stock photo relating to the story, such as wedding bands in place of a wedding photo.

Photos: All photo albums are accessible only to logged-in members of the Community, with the exception of the cover photo of an album, which is visible to the public. We will always ask your permission before using an image as a cover photo.

Note: For privacy, please ensure that everyone in a photo you submit is happy to be seen by the OC Connect community

Community Page Comments: Are only visible to logged-in members of the Community and the system administrators

Messages between OC Connect members: For security and a pleasant user experience, these comments may be accessed by the system administrator 

Note: In the unlikely event that anyone is deemed to be misusing the Messaging system, they may be blocked from further use

Your Profile and Your Profile Photo: Your Profile will be visible to anyone who is logged into OC CONNECT, and you may supply as much or as little information about yourself as you'd like to share with this group. OC CONNECT will use whatever information you supply to suggest connections with other OCs who have created Account Profiles, so the more information you supply, the more suggestions you will receive. Your Profile photo will only appear publicly on feeds such as 'New Joiners' or 'Careers Volunteers' if these feeds are switched on. Your name or other details will not show, just your photo

Latest Activity Feed on the logged-in Home Page: This is a summary of all recent OC CONNECT Community activity, visible to all logged-in users
