Mayfield was delighted to welcome Nusrat Ghani, MP for Sussex Weald, to the School for a special visit that offered Sixth Form students a valuable insight into contemporary politics and public service. Her visit included addressing the Sixth Form assembly and joining a thoughtful roundtable discussion with Year 12 and 13 Politics students.

During the assembly, Ms Ghani shared her personal journey into Westminster, offering an honest and engaging account of the experiences that shaped her path to becoming a Member of Parliament. She spoke about the opportunities and challenges she faced along the way, providing students with a real‑world perspective on resilience, purpose, and public leadership.

The roundtable offered students the chance to explore a range of meaningful political issues. Discussions covered:

Women’s representation in politics

Major challenges facing young people today

Votes at 16

The responsibilities that come with parliamentary roles

Students were encouraged to question, challenge, and consider how these topics connect with their own lives and aspirations. Ms Ghani’s openness and willingness to engage in genuine dialogue created an atmosphere of curiosity and critical thinking.

A key theme throughout her visit was the importance of female empowerment. Ms Ghani emphasised how crucial it is for women to be fully represented across all sectors — not only in politics, but in leadership roles everywhere. Her message resonated strongly with pupils, underscoring the value of confidence, ambition, and active participation in shaping the future.

Mayfield is extremely grateful to Nusrat Ghani for giving her time, her insight, and her encouragement. Her visit provided a memorable and inspiring experience for our Politics students and the wider Sixth Form community, reinforcing the school’s continued commitment to fostering informed, thoughtful, and empowered young women.
