International Women's Day 2025
Tracy Edwards MBE
On International Women's Day 2025, we had the honour of welcoming Tracy Edwards MBE, a trailblazer in the world of sailing and a prominent advocate for girls' education. At just 21, Tracy made history as the first female to participate in the Whitbread Round the World Race aboard "Atlantic Privateer." In a landmark achievement in 1990, she led the first all-woman crew, "Maiden," around the globe, securing second place despite facing formidable challenges, thereby inspiring countless women in sports. Throughout her career, Tracy has broken barriers, from establishing the first mixed-gender record-breaking crew to launching the Maiden Factor, which aims to educate girls worldwide. In 2024, Maiden made headlines again by completing a round-the-world race with an incredibly diverse crew, further solidifying Tracy’s legacy in promoting inclusivity in sailing. Tracy's powerful message, “If you educate a girl, she educates her family, village, her community and her country,” resonates deeply, and we are immensely grateful for the inspiration she provided to Mayfield girls.
