Caedmon Stage Play about Women Pioneers

Caedmon Theatre Company stage 'Blue Stockings,' the story of female students who battled stereotypes at 19th-century Cambridge

In January, Caedmon Theatre Company performed 'Blue Stockings' by Jessica Swale in the Concert Hall to an invited audience.

Set in 1896, the play follows a diverse group of young women who were among the first females admitted to Girton College, Cambridge. Despite studying ferociously and matching their male peers grade for grade, the group are not eligible to be granted degrees because of their sex. Challenging mysogyny within the University and outside it, the Blue Stocking strive to prove their equality with their male classmates and to realise their academic ambitions.

Sally Gerstmeyer, Head of Drama Department, said, 'The cast members of Caedmon demonstrated professionalism, resilience, and creativity. Each one rising to the challenge and coming together to create an entertaining and thought-provoking play. A big well done to all of those involved!'
