SHCJ Celebration

It was a bittersweet day in Mayfield, marked by a profound sense of gratitude and reflection as current pupils, former students, dedicated staff members from both the past and present, and what felt like half of Mayfield village came together to bid farewell to the beloved Sisters Jean and Maria. As they prepare for their new chapter in Harrogate, the atmosphere was imbued with a mixture of sorrow and warm memories.

The day wasn't just about saying goodbye to Jean and Maria; it was a poignant farewell to the entire Society of the Holy Child Jesus (SHCJ) congregation, which has been an integral part of our school's history for an astonishing 152 years. For the first time since the school's foundation, we will find ourselves without an SHCJ presence on site, and this realization weighs heavily on all of us. It evokes a deep appreciation for the Sisters who have shaped our community and instilled within us the values that have guided generations of students.

While it is a moment of loss, it also serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of the SHCJ charism in our daily lives. The Cornelian values—joy, compassion, integrity, generosity, gratitude, courage and respect—are not just ideals to be admired; they are principles we are called to embody moving forward. The legacy of these extraordinary women lives on in each of us, and there is a renewed determination within our school community to carry forth the torch that they have passed down through the years.

In a heartfelt tribute at the Thanksgiving Mass, Bishop Richard Moth eloquently captured the sentiments of everyone gathered: to Jean, to Maria, to the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, and to every sister who ever contributed their time, care, and wisdom to our school, we collectively say, "Thank you. Thank you. Thank you." Your impact will forever resonate in the hearts of everyone who has walked these halls.

As we conclude this chapter, we do so with a profound sense of blessing for Sisters Jean and Maria. Though the physical distance between us may grow, the bond we share will remain unbreakable. God bless you, Sisters, and rest assured, you will always hold a cherished place in our hearts. We will miss you dearly, and carry your spirit with us as we forge ahead into the future you so lovingly helped to shape.
