Towards the end of the summer holiday, Mayfield was delighted to welcome a small group of Old Cornelians who had been deeply involved in music during their time at the School. The evening included a tour of the Music School, visits to familiar spaces such as the Chapel and the newly refreshed concert hall and concluded with dinner at the Middle House in the village. It was a valuable opportunity to reconnect and reflect on the lasting impact of music at Mayfield.

Conversations throughout the evening highlighted the School’s long and well-regarded choral tradition, established under the leadership of Kenneth Pont and continued by successive Directors of Music. All those present had been members of the Scholar Cantorum choir, and it was noted with interest that, at one time, Mayfield supported no fewer than five Schola choirs at one time! What stood out most was the enduring passion these Old Cornelians hold for music and their strong desire to see it once again flourish as a central part of School life and the wider community.

This enthusiasm resonates strongly with the vision of the new Director of Music, Theodore Frazer, who joined Mayfield in August. With extensive experience as a singer, organist, pianist and choral director, and following previous roles at King Edward’s Witley and Barrow Hills School, Theo brings energy, ambition and a clear commitment to widening musical opportunities for all pupils. His focus includes nurturing early musical ability, supporting outstanding musicians across year groups, and encouraging girls to be ambitious, courageous and joyful in their musical journeys.

The evening also served as a reminder of the pride Old Cornelians take in Mayfield and their generous support of its continued growth. A particularly poignant example of this legacy is the Colback Music Library, a gift whose roots lie in a rich family history of musical generosity. Donated by Lucy Colback (Class of 1989)’s father and inspired by Kenneth Pont’s passion for music, the collection traces its origins to Germaine Schellinx, a celebrated Belgian violinist, and her lifelong companion, Toty Leleup. Their collection of music and musical literature now forms a valued part of Mayfield’s resources, continuing a lineage of shared musical love and learning.

Music at Mayfield stands on strong foundations, shaped by tradition, sustained by generosity, and invigorated by a renewed vision for the future. Old Cornelians are warmly encouraged to remain involved, to continue offering their support and encouragement, and to allow this exciting chapter of musical growth to develop over time. Further details of musical events throughout the year will be shared soon, and the School looks forward to welcoming the OC community to celebrate music at Mayfield in the months ahead.
